Birding in Albania: 12 Days Tom Cook's Birding Tour to Albania.

Tom Cook is British and he represents the first client of Birding Albania back in 2019. Tom really loves Albania. Since his first tour, we have always stayed in touch and Tom has encouraged and supported us to grow bigger. He has been promoting Albania and birding opportunities in Albania several times in the UK magazines.

It is a distinguishing pleasure for us to title the tour on his name, to acknowledge his support and express our gratitude.

This 11 days’ tour, includes the best birding sites in Albania. Some of the sites are widely known and some of the sites are almost unknown but they hold some of the rarest species in Albania.  In this tour is reflected the knowledge of over a decade of bird surveying in the country and new discoveries.

© Birding Albania

This trip includes visiting  some of the best birding sites in Albania, including:

Divjake-Karavasta National Park

Which is the most important bird area in Albania and one of the most important in the whole Mediterranean Basin. This area is distinguished for the presence of the unique colony of the Dalmatian Pelican in Albania that is nesting in the same site since at least one century ago. In addition, Divjake-Karavasta holds the largest mixed colony of herons in Albania with around 4000 breeding pairs of 6 different species of herons. The area is well-known as a breeding site for many water birds and is the main wintering site for waterfowl in Albania. Here is an excellent site to see: Dalmatian Pelican, Pigmy Cormorant, Glossy Ibis, Squacco Heron, Cattle Egret, Little Tern, Common Tern, Slender-billed Gull, Yellow-legged Gull, European Bee-Eater, Collared Pratincole, Black-winged Stilt, Calandra Lark, Short-toed Lark and many other species.

The herpetofauna is also rich and similar to almost the all coastal parts of Albania. Here is present the endemic Albanian Pool Frog (Pelophylax shqipericus) and the enigmatic Hornted-nose Viper (Vipera ammodytes), Glass Lizard (Pseudopus apodus ) etc.

Vjose-Narte Protected Area

This area on our judgment, represents the best birding site in Albania. Vjosë-Nartë is one of the most important wetland complexes, not only nationally but also internationally. Over 200 species of wild birds have been recorded in this area. Together with Divjaka-Karavasta, they form a continuous ecosystem, making for one of the most important wetlands complexes in the whole Adriatic Flyway, where hundreds of thousands of birds regularly stop each year during their migration from nesting sites to wintering areas in autumn and vice versa in the spring.

This area is the most important in Albania for nesting of some wader (Charadriiformes) species with breeding populations exceeding 1% of the total population of a biogeographical area. Such is the case, for the Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avoceta) with around 1% of the common population of Southeast Europe, the Black Sea and Turkey. At the same time, in this area is regularly encountered over 1 - 3% of the Mediterranean and Black Sea population for other species such as the case of the Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus), the case of Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) and Collared Pratincole (Glaerola pratincola).

Here is easy to see many water bird and other speices, including the rare Greater Spotted Cuckdoo (Clamator glandarius).

Butrint National Park

Butrint National Park is the most visited site in Albania, due to the presence of one of the most interesting archaeological parks in Europe. However, the area of Butrint represents one of the richest environments in Albania in terms of biodiversity. In a small surface of land is scattered a high number of different natural habitats and landscapes, holding a wide diversity of species, making the area highly attractive not only for cultural tourism but also for eco-tourism.

Birds are one of the most interesting and diverse groups of fauna in this area. In Butrint are registered around 250 bird species. The site is both interesting for water birds and passerines.

Species to be highlighted are White Stork (Ciconia ciconia), Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus), Caspian Tern (Sterna caspia), Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis), Golden Oriol (Oriolus oriolus), Black Headed Bunting (Emberiza melanocephala), Olive-tree Warbler (Hippolais olivetorum) etc.

Butrint National Park, it is recognized as the richest site in Albania as regards to the diversity of reptiles where in a relatively small surface are found over half of the reptile species that occur in the whole country. Here it is easy to see the pond terrapins such as the European Pond Terrapin (Emys orbicularis) and Neck-striped Terrapin (Mauremis rivulata). In addition, it is the almost the only area in Albania where we can see the Marginated Tortoise (Testudo marginata). Moreover, the area offers great opportunities for seeing a good number of lizards including here the Balkan Wall Lizard (Podarcis tauricus), the Erhard’s Wall Lizard (Podarcis erhardi), the European Glass Lizard (Pseudopus apodus) etc. Furthermore, the area offers excellent opportunities for seeing a high number of snakes including here: the Sand Boa (Eryx jaculus), Leopard Snake (Zamenis situla), Four-lined Snake (Elaphe quatrolineata) etc. As regards to amphibians, apart from other species in the area is found the rare Greek Water Frog (Pelophylac epiroticus).

Albanian Alps

Albanian Alps, offer some of the most gorgeous landscapes of the country. Here are found all the large carnivores and herbivores of Albania, including here the Brown Bear (Ursus actros), Grey Wolf (Canis lupus), Balkan Lynx (Lynx lynx balcanicus), Balkan Chamois (Rupicarpa rupicarpa) etc. In terms of birds, are also found a good number of species, including here the Western Capercaille (Tetrao urugallos), Rock Partridge (Alectoris graeca), Gloden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), Blcak Wood Pecker (Dendrocopus martius), White-backed Wood Pecker (Dendrocopus leucotos), Ring Ouzel (Turdus torquatus), Crested Tit (Lophophane cristatus) and many other species.

Other Special Sites for Specials Species

In this tour we have included also other special sites for rather special species, such as Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus), Levant’s Sparrowhawk (Accipiter brevipes), Golden Oriol (Oriolus oriolus), European Roller (Garrulus glandarius), Blakc-headed Bunting (Emberiza melanocephala), Rock Nuthatch (Sitta neumayer), Blue Rock Thrush (Monticola solitarius) etc.

  1. Tom Cook:

I have now completed three trips to Albania with Birding Albania. Our tour guide each time was Mirjan Topi. Mirjan has expert knowledge of bird species, habitats and locations. He was also able to extend this to include butterflies and reptiles as well as locating many rare species of plants. This certainly satisfied the wide ranging interests of the group I travelled with in May 2024. As a bonus he is also very familiar with the important historic towns and archaeological sites (also of wildlife interest) that Albania is rightly famous for. The care of clients and attention to detail reflect the amazing hospitality of the Albanian people. I have now done two individual tours and will be returning to Albania while the group from the May ’24 visit (5 Brits and 1 German) were so impressed that we immediately signed up to do a tour of Montenegro with Mirjan in June 2025.
    Highly recommended.
