Birding in Vjose-Narte (Narta Lagoon) is the most rewarding tour bird-wise in the coastal ecosystems of Albania. The Protected Landscape Vjose–Narte, commonly known as Narta Lagoon, is one of Albania’s most important coastal wetlands and a key birdwatching destination in the country. Located just north of the city of Vlora, the area covers a wide mosaic of coastal lagoons, salt pans, sandy islands, mudflats, dunes, freshwater marshes, dry shrublands and low-intensity agricultural fields. This diversity of habitats supports exceptionally rich biodiversity and remarkable concentrations of birds throughout the year.

The lagoon and surrounding wetlands are internationally recognised for their ecological value and are part of the Vjose Delta, one of the last largely natural river deltas in the entire Mediterranean. The Vjose–Narte area is a major stopover, wintering and breeding site for countless migratory species moving along the Adriatic Flyway. It is one of the best places in Albania to observe large numbers of waterbirds, waders, terns and raptors, with seasonal highlights that you can rarely see elsewhere in the country.

The site is famous for hosting thousands of Greater Flamingos, especially during winter and early spring, creating one of the most iconic wildlife spectacles in Albania. The saltpans and mudflats are excellent for shorebirds such as avocets, stilts, plovers and sandpipers, while the surrounding dry habitats are home to species like Stone-curlew, Tawny Pipit, Crested Lark and various shrikes. During migration, the area becomes even richer, attracting herons, egrets, harriers, ospreys, gulls and a wide array of passage waders.

Beyond its birdlife, the Vjose–Narte landscape holds cultural and scenic value. The vast open horizons of the lagoon, the traditional saltpans, small fishing huts, and the backdrop of the Ceraunian Mountains make it a uniquely beautiful place for both birdwatchers and nature travellers.

Easily accessible and highly productive for birdwatching in all seasons, Vjose–Narte stands among Albania’s most rewarding natural areas to explore. It is an ideal destination for a full-day birding trip, offering a rich blend of habitats, species diversity and stunning coastal scenery.

For group tours, we depart from Tirana at 07:15. For individual or private tours, we arrange a start time that is convenient for the participants.

The drive to the Vjose–Narte Protected Landscape takes around 2 hours, and we may make a short 10–15 minute stop on the way for facilities or to grab a coffee.

Upon arrival in the area, we will begin the itinerary for the day, which includes exploring the main habitats of the Vjose Delta: the lagoon, saltpans, mudflats, coastal dunes, freshwater marshes, dry steppe-like shrublands, as well as low-intensity agricultural fields. This diversity of habitats makes the tour highly rewarding in terms of species richness, offering excellent opportunities to observe waterbirds, waders, raptors and many Mediterranean specialists.

Besides birdwatching, our approach aims to show you the complete landscape of the Vjose–Narte area, including its traditional saltpans, open coastal scenery and characteristic delta environment. It is a full, varied and very enjoyable birding experience in one of Albania’s most productive wetlands.
