Birding in Shkodra Lake is an excellent full day tour to western coastal lowalnds of northern Albania. Lake Shkodra, shared between Albania and Montenegro, is the largest lake in the Balkans and one of the most important freshwater ecosystems in southeastern Europe. The Albanian side of the lake includes a rich variety of habitats such as freshwater wetlands, extensive reedbeds, river deltas, wet meadows, alluvial forests, agricultural fields and gently sloping lakeshores. This mosaic of habitats makes Lake Shkodra an outstanding birdwatching destination throughout the year.

The lake supports large numbers of waterbirds, including herons, egrets, cormorants, grebes and ducks, while the surrounding marshes and wetlands are ideal for observing waders, warblers and various wetland specialists. During migration periods, the area becomes particularly active, offering opportunities to see harriers, ospreys, bee-eaters, rolllers, pipits, wagtails and a wide range of passage species. The lake’s reedbeds are also important breeding grounds for species such as Pygmy Cormorant, Little Bittern and Great Reed Warbler.

The combination of mountain views, traditional lakeside villages and wide open wetlands creates a scenic and peaceful environment, making the area attractive not only for birdwatchers but also for nature lovers and photographers. Several rivers, including the Buna and Drin, flow into or out of the lake, adding further habitat diversity and ecological richness.

Easily accessible from Tirana and Shkodra city, the Albanian side of Lake Shkodra offers an excellent setting for a full-day birding trip, providing a mix of freshwater habitats and diverse birdlife in one of Albania’s most beautiful natural landscapes.

For group tours, we depart from Tirana at 07:15. For individual or private tours, we arrange a start time that is convenient for the participants.

The drive to the Albanian side of Lake Shkodra takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes. Along the way, we may make a short 10–15 minute stop for facilities or to grab a coffee.

Upon arrival in the Lake Shkodra area, we will begin the itinerary for the day by exploring the main habitats around the lake: extensive reedbeds, freshwater marshes, riverside wetlands, wet meadows, alluvial forests, lakeshore fields and small agricultural areas. This variety of habitats provides excellent opportunities to observe a wide range of waterbirds, waders, wetland passerines and many migratory species, depending on the season.

In addition to birdwatching, we aim to show you the characteristic landscapes that make Lake Shkodra so scenic, including views of the surrounding mountains, waterways and traditional lakeside villages.
