Birding in Patoku Lagoon, this beautiful coastal wetland located on the Adriatic coast, south of Lezha. It is one of Albania’s most accessible and rewarding birdwatching areas, combining scenic landscapes with rich biodiversity. The lagoon is part of a wider wetland system that includes shallow coastal waters, mudflats, saltmarshes, reedbeds, small islands, fishing channels and low-intensity agricultural areas. This diversity of habitats supports a wide range of bird species throughout the year.
Patoku is especially well known for its traditional coastal fishing culture, with wooden huts and narrow channels creating a distinctive landscape. The mix of open water, muddy edges and vegetated margins makes the area excellent for observing herons, egrets, cormorants, terns, gulls and a variety of waders. The surrounding fields and shrublands often host species such as Stone-curlew, pipits, larks and shrikes, while the nearby woodlands offer opportunities to see woodland birds.
During migration periods, the lagoon becomes even more productive, attracting harriers, ospreys, sandpipers, plovers, storks and many passage waterbirds. Winter also brings large concentrations of ducks, grebes, cormorants and other waterbirds, making Patoku an all-season birdwatching destination.
With its easy accessibility, varied habitats and picturesque setting, Patoku Lagoon is an excellent location for a full-day birding trip, offering rewarding observations and a memorable experience on Albania’s central Adriatic coast.
For group tours, we depart from Tirana at 07:15. For individual or private tours, we arrange a start time that is convenient for the participants.
The drive to Patoku Lagoon takes around around 1 hour.
Upon arrival in the area, we will begin the itinerary for the day by exploring the main habitats around Patoku Lagoon: shallow lagoon waters, mudflats, reedbeds, coastal channels, small islands, saltmarshes and surrounding agricultural fields. This variety of habitats offers excellent opportunities to observe a wide range of species, from herons and egrets to waders, gulls, terns and many migratory waterbirds.
In addition to birdwatching, we aim to show you the characteristic landscapes that define the Patoku wetland, including its traditional fishing huts and coastal scenery.
