Birding in Durrësi Wetland, located along the Adriatic coast near the city of Durrës, is a diverse and productive complex of lagoon systems, marshes, river mouths and coastal habitats. Despite its proximity to urban areas, the wetland retains significant ecological value and supports a rich variety of bird species throughout the year. It includes shallow brackish lagoons, mudflats, reedbeds, estuaries, coastal dunes and freshwater patches, forming an excellent habitat mosaic for waterbirds, waders and migrants.
The area is well known for its concentrations of herons, egrets, cormorants, gulls and terns, while mudflats often hold various sandpipers, plovers and other shorebirds. During migration periods, the wetland becomes especially interesting, with frequent passages of harriers, ospreys, bee-eaters, wagtails, pipits and a wide range of long-distance migratory species. Winter months also bring gatherings of ducks, grebes and other waterbirds, making Durrësi Wetland an all-season birdwatching destination.
The combination of open water, vegetated margins, sandy coastal stretches and surrounding open fields creates a landscape that is particularly rewarding for birdwatchers. Its easy accessibility from Tirana and Durrës makes it an ideal option for a relaxed yet highly productive day trip.
Easily reached and rich in species diversity, the Durrësi Wetland offers a pleasant and rewarding birding experience on Albania’s central Adriatic coast.
