Birding in Butrint National Park is a long full day tour. Butrint is one of Albania’s most impressive nature and cultural destinations, combining exceptional biodiversity with more than 3,000 years of human history. Located in the far south of the country, near the Greek border, the park includes a rich mosaic of habitats such as freshwater lakes, salt marshes, reedbeds, brackish lagoons, river deltas, coastal forests, Mediterranean scrub and open fields. This diversity makes Butrint one of the most rewarding birdwatching areas in southern Albania.

The heart of the park is Lake Butrint, a brackish lagoon connected to the Ionian Sea through the Vivari Channel. The lake and surrounding wetlands support large numbers of herons, egrets, cormorants, grebes, waders and various waterbirds throughout the year. During migration periods, the area becomes especially productive, offering excellent opportunities to see harriers, ospreys, bee-eaters, shrikes, wagtails, pipits and numerous shorebirds. Winter months also host important concentrations of ducks and other waterbirds.

Butrint is also famous for its ancient archaeological site, a UNESCO World Heritage property. The combination of historic ruins, forests and lagoon landscapes creates a unique atmosphere where nature and culture coexist harmoniously. In the surrounding areas, including the Vrina Plain, Ksamil wetlands and the nearby coastal dunes, a wide range of habitats supports Mediterranean bird species and adds even more diversity to the day’s birdwatching experience.

With its exceptional scenery, rich wildlife and outstanding historical setting, Butrint National Park is a superb destination for a full-day birding tour in southern Albania.

For group tours, we depart from Tirana at 07:15. For individual or private tours, we arrange a start time that is convenient for the participants.

The drive to Butrint National Park takes around 4 hours. On the way south, we may make one or two short stops of 10–15 minutes for facilities or to grab a coffee, depending on the group’s needs.

Upon arrival in the park, we will begin the itinerary for the day, exploring the main habitats around Butrint and its surroundings: Lake Butrint, the Vivari Channel, freshwater and brackish marshes, reedbeds, Mediterranean scrub, coastal wetlands and nearby open fields. This combination of habitats offers excellent opportunities to observe waterbirds, waders, raptors, migrant passerines and various Mediterranean species.

In addition to birdwatching, we aim to show you the characteristic landscapes that make Butrint so unique, where natural ecosystems blend with one of Albania’s most important archaeological and cultural sites. It is a diverse, rewarding and memorable birding experience in the heart of southern Albania.
