Drino Valley was recognized in 2016 as a Global Important Bird and Biodiversity Area, due to the presence of up to 3% of the global population of the Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni) that form there the largest roosting site of this species in Europe with up to 6000 individuals in one single roost. In addition, in this area are still found more than half of the occupied territories of the Egyptian Vulture (Neoprhon percnopterus) that currently has a population of less than 10 breeding pairs in the whole country. Moreover, here are found to breed as well some quite rare bird species for Albania such as the Booted Eagle (Hieraetus pennatus) and Levant’s Sparrowhawk (Accipiter brevipes). In this area are found as common breeders the interesting species of the Rock Nuthuch (Sitta neymauer) and Blue Rock Thrush (Monticola solitaries). Highlands of this area particularly the region of Kurvelesh offer some of the most spectacular canyon landscapes of the whole of Europe.
